There were 1133 patients of DM admission of this Hospital, Department of Internal Medicine, from 1982 to 1987. Among them, 23 patients of diabetic coma(Diabetic ketoacidosis & Hyperosmolar Nonketotic Coma) were evaluated
The results are as follows:
1. Diabetic Coma patients were 23 among 1133 DM patients(2%). DKA was 16 patients(69.6%f), Hypeosmolar coma was 7 patients(30.4%).
2. The mean age of DKA was 34.71 ¡¾4.66(SEM)years old, and that of Hyperosmolar nonketotic coma was 57.28¡¾5.45(SEM)years old, whose difference was statistically significant(P<0.01)
3. Among the various precipitating factors. infection was 6 cases, discontinuation of insulin use was 4 cases, CVA was 3 cases, in a order of frequncy.
4. In the case of previous treatment, 13 cases received no previous treatment, 6 cases received insulin injection, 1 case received oral hypoglycemic agent.
5. The mean PH on admission was 7.12¡¾0.05(SEM), and the mean blood glucose level was 480.78¡¾54.66(SEM)mg/dl.
6. 13 cases were recovered, 6 cases were resulted in death, 4 cases were not evaluable.
